October 7th, 2010 Author: Anneke

In May of 2007 Joshua Petrie was working as a plant operator at Quicksilver Resources, which is a gas processing plant. On May 27 he tried to start a hot oil heater at the plant. After a few attempts at doing this the the heater exploded. He was taken to the hospital with trauma to his head and chest. The next day he passed away.

Hanover Compression, which is the previous owner of the plant was sued along with Quicksilver Resources. The case stated that both had a responsibility to make sure things were properly installed and up to safety standards and regulations. If Hanover had properly installed safety valves and purge systmes this problem could have been avoided. Both Hanover and Quicksilver had been on notice since 2005 about the fact that they did not have these two things installed. Hanover is a big part of the case because they sold the plant to Quicksilver in a ready to use condition.

The case was settled for $82.5 million. Hanover was respoinsible for 80% and Quicksilver was responsible for 20%.

The Jere Beasley Report covered a story about a fatal pipeline explosion recently.

On July 15, 2009 in Smith County Mississippi one man was killed and three others were injured when a pipeline that they were testing exploded. According to OSHA the lid on the separator had flown off. This caused large portions of the pipe to be thrown up in the air. The workers were using nitrogen at the time to pressure test the pipes.

There should have been more steps taken by the company to ensure their employees safety.
