Fatal Ohio car accidents require an accident reconstruction

February 4th, 2010 Author: Anneke

An accident reconstruction is something that can be very useful in an Ohio wrongful death case.

In most wrongful death cases involving an Ohio fatal car accident, the highway patrol or the investigating officers do their own, independent accident reconstruction.

What our Ohio fatal car accident lawyers like to do in a wrongful death case is to hire our own, independent accident reconstruction expert. They will take measurements, they will take photographs, and we will interview the witnesses, and we will have an accurate accident reconstruction that will help resolve your case.

Holiday drunk driving crashes | Ohio drunk driving car accident lawyers

The holidays, especially the time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, are a prime time for auto accidents relating to drunk driving in Ohio.

In fact, 38 percent of all wrongful deaths from auto accidents are alcohol-related and repeat drunk drivers are responsible for almost 60 percent of those alcohol-related deaths.

The holiday season is one of the deadliest times of the year for alcohol-related car accidents in northwest Ohio. According to Mothers against Drunk Driving, more than 1,000 people die nationwide during Thanksgiving to New Year’s drunk driving car crashes. There is no question that this is due to the increased consumption of alcohol during the holiday season.

Here are a few ways that you can help prevent Ohio drunk driving car accidents:

  • Always choose a designated driver
  • If you cannot find a designated driver or a friend to drive you home, stay the night.
  • Never get in a vehicle with a drunk driver

According to edmunds.com, as reported by Scott Memmer, about 41 percent of 2009 car models had standard or optional rearview cameras.

However, many automakers have begun offering cameras and sensors as standard or optional equipment in vehicles. And, a number of suppliers have begun offering products to improve rearward visiblity and prevent backover deaths. Many of these products are available right now, including offerings from Audiovox, Gentex, Kenwood and Magna Donnelly.

Janette Fennell, founder and president of the nonprofit organization KidsAndCars.org, stated, “Everyone would agree that the worst thing that can ever happen is to lose a child. Add to that that you were somehow responsible — that you were the driver of the vehicle. Most parents never get over it.”

In December of 2005, two year-old Aliviah Gridley was killed when her uncle, who was trying to catch dogs that had gotten free, struck her with his truck when backing out of the driveway, according to edmunds.com as reported by Scott Memmer.

In 2007 alone, the deaths of 232 children resulted from non-traffic accidents, the majority being accidental backovers. Each year since 2002, more than 9,000 nontraffic injuries have occurred, according to the nonprofit organization KidsAndCars.org.

There is currently not a rear visibility standard on the books. However, in July 2005 President Bush signed a $286.4 billion transportation bill: the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). One provision of the act requires the Department of Transportation to study effective methods for reducing injuries and deaths involving passenger vehicles that are backing up.
